› Slipknot - All Hope Is Gone

It's been a long wait since Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses) but on August 20th, Slipknot finally released their fourth studio album, All Hope is Gone, through Roadrunner Records. Now, Slipknot fans everywhere are debating whether or not the 4 year wait was worth it; with a controversial new sound that crosses the boundaries of many different genres, All Hope is Gone is set to be one of the most talked about albums of 2008.
The album starts off heavy and angry with Gematria (The Killing Name) and other tracks such as This Cold Black and the title track, All Hope is Gone in particular are also heavy and give us the sort of thing we expect from Slipknot. Some tracks, however, are a little more disappointing. Dead Memories for example may as well be a LostProphets song; it's not the sort of style we've come to expect with its American, angsty melodic vocals that would make even Ville Valo proud and its light-rock almost pop-sounding catchy tune. Then there's Gehenna which reeks of Vol.3 with it's slow, melancholy vibes and just as we thought the days of low-quality sound had been erased by the CD, it seems that Slipknot have played Vermillion on an old Sony Walkman that's running out of batteries and re-released it as Vermillion Pt. 2.
It's not all bad though. In fact, some tracks are very, very good. Snuff, the album's ballad, is fantastic. Sure, some of the lyrics are little 'emo' but recently it seems that any song with a bit of emotion in it is painted with that brush and the powerful vocals more than make up for it. There's also Vendetta which starts off as a very catch rock 'n' roll style tune that makes you want to tap your feet and by about half way through it's merged in with Slipknot's own style. Several genres are touched in that track alone!
Some of the more hardcore Slipknot fans are seeing this album as the death of the band as they know it; the Stone Sour virus taking over and a lost battle against the Vol. 3 illness. Fans of music, however, are seeing this as an experimental but overall quite decent album. What can be said for everyone though is that after listening to All Hope is Gone you will certainly have a strong opinion of it in one direction or the other, that is guaranteed.
